New Orleans port cargo hits 14-year high The amount of cargo at the docks increased 28 percent over the 2013 numbers. 'It was a busy year for the port, and these numbers reflect the success we've realized from the combined efforts of the entire port community,' said Gary LaGrange, port president and CEO. 'This is great news and creates momentum for our terminal operators and customers. The challenge now is to build upon these successes and continue to grow.' A jump in the amount of imported iron and steel that was handled by the port led to the increase.
In 2014, there were 3.5 million tons of iron and steel that went through the port, a 102 percent increase over the year before. The amount of breakbulk cargo - goods not transported in shipping containers or tankers - was up 52 percent from 2013's total to reach nearly 3.8 million tons. The total amount of cargo to pass through the port, which includes export grain, midstream operations and private tonnage, also was up 28 percent to top 31 million tons. LaGrange said he expects 2015's cargo figures will be better because of the thriving chemical industry and new shippers, such as Chiquita Brands International, which returned to New Orleans in October after a 40-year absence.
'New weekly services, such as CMA CGM's Victory Bridge Service to Europe, the return of Maersk Line's vessels, Chiquita cargo and our new Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal will position the port for future growth,' he said. 6 Fini Welcomes Carmel Duplantis (licensed aesthetician 15 years experience) $59 Special April 6th, 13th, and 18th 10 - 4 pm Fini- A Beauty Boutique 6250 General Diaz New Orleans LA 70124 Your Appointment Will Include: 30 Minute Complimentary Skin Analysis, Microdermabrasion and Non-Surgical Facelift. To 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 8, 2015 Music Concert - Pianist Sal Liberto Jefferson & Napoleon Rooms, East Bank Regional Library, Metairie PIANIST SAL LIBERTO TICKLES THE IVORIES AT JEFF PARISH LIBRARY PERFORMANCE METAIRIE, LA - Pianist Salvadore Liberto will perform at 7 p.m. On Wednesday, April 8, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon Avenue, Metairie. The performance is free-of-charge and is open to the public. Registration is not required. Members of the Friends of the Jefferson Public Library will be present for those who want to purchase compact discs.
Liberto has been writing, recording, and performing original music for 20 years. He has released four studio albums and has played at many performing arts centers, theaters, coffeehouses, and colleges across the United States. From Grammy-winning producer John Snyder: 'In this group of songs there are melodies that you will not be able to forget, feelings that will not wash off or dissipate. This is not because they are easy and logical and simple but because of their effect, their hopefulness, their uplift. Let them lift you, let them neutralize your cynicism, let them lighten your load and diminish your doubt, let them remind you that love is abundant in this world and we are never far from it.'
From Lawrence F. Specker, Mobile Press-Register: 'There's often a fine line between entertainment and inspiration. Sal Liberto isn't shy about his ambition to straddle it.' From Jan Bixler, Administrator, Unity Church Gulfport, MS: 'When I asked Sal to come to Unity Church of Gulfport to address our congregation, I had a general idea of what his message and music would be about. What I didn't know was that his heartfelt belief system would mirror ours at our non-denominational church here on the Gulf Coast. His message was timeless and inspired. And then there is his music!
Sal's musical style, great piano playing, and wonderful lyrics are an absolute joy. We can't wait for his return to offer a spiritual message and entertain in his fresh and delightful style.' From folk singer Livingston Taylor: 'Sal is a nightmarish act to follow.'

Cinematography is the great unsung hero of filmic art. This month we're going to show two films that exhibit excellent cinematography.
The Director is usually credited as the 'author' of a film, but the cinematographer the 'author' of the image. We'd like to give you the tools to appreciate this type of authorship. There's a lot you can learn to refine your eye and deepen your ability to notice all the beautiful choices being made in every frame of a great film. This week we're showing a film with great black and white cinematography. The Fugitive was made by one of America's greatest filmmakers: John Ford.
It was Ford's favorite of his own films. More importantly for our interests, The Fugitive was shot by Gabriel Figueroa--one of the greatest black and white cinematographers of all time.
Local Film Night Thursday, April 9 at 7:00 Indywood's grand mission is to foster local filmmaking culture. Every month we do a Local Film Night. The filmmakers in our neighborhood send in short films that they've made around New Orleans, and we screen the cream of the crop.

A renowned attorney who has overseen the claims process for such high-profile disasters as the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the BP oil spill, will deliver a public lecture April 7 at Tulane Law School. Feinberg, who served as administrator of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility from 2010 to 2012, will talk about his extensive experience in assessing who should get paid what and how the law can respond to calamity.
The title of his lecture, which is free and open to the public, is 'Unconventional Responses to Unique Catastrophes: Tailoring the Law to Meet the Challenges.' It is set for 5 p.m. In the Wendell H. Gauthier Appellate Moot Court Room 110 at Weinmann Hall, 6329 Freret St. A reception will follow.
Esquire magazine has called Feinberg In addition to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he has overseen the claims process for the Boston Marathon bombings and the Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting rampages. The Obama Administration and BP jointly designated Feinberg as administrator of the Gulf Coast Claims Facility to determine payment for the families of oil-rig workers who were killed in the Deepwater Horizon explosion and the Gulf Coast residents whose livelihoods were devastated by the damage. Even before he became an in-demand compensation fund administrator, Feinberg was a pre-eminent mediator. Among other cases, he helped negotiate a $180 million settlement in a class-action suit brought by Vietnam veterans injured by exposure to Agent Orange. After Congress created the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, the first time federal money was used to directly pay the injured and relatives of mass disaster, Feinberg distributed about $7 billion. He wrote about the experience in the 2005 book Feinberg is currently reviewing claims stemming from crashes linked to defective GM ignition switches.

No topic was off-limits, including nude housekeeping, sex in a motorcycle helmet, the proper was to hang toilet paper, sibling rivalries, addiction, religion, and wandering spouses. Landers regaled her readers with direct, insightful, and often humorously honest responses. Late on a 1975 night in Landers' Chicago apartment, an ironic twist of events confronts her with a looming deadline for a column dealing with a new kind of heartbreak: her own. As she shares her struggles to complete the column with us, we learn as much about ourselves as we do about the wise, funny, no-nonsense woman whose daily dialogue with America helped shape the social and sexual landscapes of the last half century. Patsy Cline' Comes to the Stage Door Canteen at The National WWII Museum Tickets Now Available for April 4--April 5 Run NEW ORLEANS - The National WWII Museum's live-theater venue, the Stage Door Canteen, regularly plays host to award-winning shows celebrating the music of the World War II era, but their newest offering will take audiences into the years following the war and celebrate one of country music's first crossover sensations. Patsy Cline,' a musical play, complete with down-home country humor and true emotion, includes many of Cline's unforgettable hits such as 'Crazy,' 'I Fall to Pieces,' 'Sweet Dreams,' 'Walkin' After Midnight,' and many more. The show, which runs April 4 - April 5, is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer, who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. It is based on a true story about Cline's friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death.
The show takes its title from Cline's letters to Seger, which she signed affectionately 'Love Always, Patsy.' Margaret Belton reprises the role of Patsy Cline from a recent award-winning appearance at Altarena Playhouse in Alameda, California. 'As long as I can remember, the music from old records was always one of my favorite sounds,' said Belton. 'Once I discovered Patsy, things changed.
I just wanted to climb into her voice and live in it. The soul and love that pours from her voice made me feel so alive, and I deeply connected with it.' In addition to her many stage and screen credits, Belton also performs regularly as the lead singer of The Patsychords. 945 Magazine Street New Orleans, LA 70130. NOLA Navy Week 2015 will be smaller, with six vessels that will be moored along the Mississippi River's east bank and opened for public tours. More than 2,700 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard personnel are expected to visit the city during the week.
The ships are scheduled to arrive April 23 and depart April 29. The USS Cole, the guided-missile destroyer that was attacked by suicide bombers in Yemen in 2000, killing 17 U.S.
Sailors and injuring 39 others, is among the five active warships from three nations currently scheduled to visit the port. The flagship for the visit is the USS Wasp, the flattop amphibious assault ship that also was part of NOLA Navy Week 2012. It embarked to New Orleans with a contingent of Marines and their fighting equipment.
The Coast Guard barque Eagle, also a highlight of the 2012 NOLA Navy Week, is scheduled to return in April. However, it will be the only tall ship this time. In addition to the Eagle, Cole and Wasp, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS James E. Williams, Canadian destroyer HMCS Athabaskan, and Great Britain's HMS Landcaster, known as 'The Queen's Frigate,' are tentatively scheduled to visit the port. France is considering sending a warship as well. The ships will be berthed along the Mississippi River, with the Eagle moored at Bienville Street in Woldenberg Park NOLA Navy Week April 23-29, 2015 Since its earliest years under the American flag, New Orleans has been the site of a major naval presence. Although it is more than 100 miles from the nearest body of open water, the width and depth of the Mississippi River has made our port city accessible for naval vessels of all sizes, types and classes to berth here.
New Orleans' longstanding naval tradition will be celebrated from April 23-29 as NOLA Navy Week returns to the Mississippi Riverfront. During that week, six ships from three nations will line the banks of the river between the French Quarter and the Crescent City Connection bridge. All of these ships will be open to the public for free, on-board tours starting Friday, April 24. Navy is bringing in the USS Wasp, the USS Cole and the USS James E. Williams and the U.S. Coast Guard will be represented by the USCGC Dauntless.
The British Royal Navy is represented by the HMS Lancaster and the Royal Canadian Navy will bring in the HMCS Athabaskan. Other events scheduled that week in conjunction with the event include: *An official Navy Week Gala held at the National World War II Museum on the night of Friday, April 24.
*A Seafood Cook Off held the morning of Sunday, April 26 at the Spanish Plaza in downtown New Orleans, adjacent to the river and next to the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk. The Cook Off will begin at 11 a.m.
And will feature culinary specialists from each of the participating ships, paired with local chefs. *A fireworks display over the river on the evening of Monday, April 27, with viewing from Woldenberg Riverfront Park and Algiers Point on the opposite bank. Other events, including musical concerts, may also be scheduled for the week. Check back at the Navy Week website, www.nolanavyweek.com for the latest updates. Visitations All of the ships will be open daily for free general public visitation beginning on Friday, April 24 and ending Tuesday, April 28. Hours of operation vary for each ship throughout the week.
Check the schedules for the individual ships in the write-ups below. Visitors will be allowed on board on a first-come, first-served basis, so be prepared to wait in line during peak times. Because these are active military ships, visitors can also expect security screenings prior to boarding. Andrew Jackson: Hero of New Orleans Through 2014-March 29, 2015 Gallery hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.; Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 533 Royal Street Admission is free. Exhibition to highlight Andrew Jackson's role at the Battle of New Orleans Display and additional programming commemorates the 200th anniversary of the battle New Orleans, Louisiana - Two hundred years ago on a battlefield just outside of New Orleans, a frontier general and his motley force of regulars troops and volunteers defeated a larger, more experienced British army intent on capturing the port city.
The Historic New Orleans Collection's new exhibition, presented in conjunction with the bicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans, sheds light on Andrew Jackson, the leader of that improbable American victory. 'Andrew Jackson: Hero of New Orleans' will be available to the public at 533 Royal St., Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., through March 29, 2015. 'Jackson was the 19th-century equivalent of a rock star,' said Jason Wiese, exhibition curator and associate director of THNOC's Williams Research Center. 'He was one of the United States' most famous heroes, as well as one of its most polarizing figures.' Before he became the seventh president of the United States, Jackson was a relatively unknown Tennessee militia general. His success in battles with Creek Indians introduced him to a national audience, but it was his triumph at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 that launched him to stardom.

What do the following have in common? Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's light bulb, Carl Benz's automobile, and Simon Hubig's pies? Paul Lutheran Church and School at 2624 Burgundy Street in the Marigny, has been around longer than all of them! Paul was founded in 1840, and was in existence before the invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the automobile, and Hubig's pies! Originally meeting in a firehouse on Chartres Street, a group of German immigrants met for a protestant church service which marked the beginning of St. Paul Lutheran Church, as we know it today.
Later that year, a German church school was added. Paul Lutheran, on the corner of Port and Burgundy, has a rich history in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.
It has persevered through many tragedies, including two fires, yellow fever, and the Civil War. During Katrina and the harrowing days thereafter, our church was Ground Zero for the people in our surrounding neighborhood (The months and years after the storm found our members and school families spread across the state and country. Yet there was no question that once again St. Paul would remain and continue our mission in its present community. We are proud that although our membership spreads throughout the greater New Orleans area (as depicted in our logo), we continue to stay true to our roots in the Marigny, Bywater, and St. Many members have now chosen this community as their home, as well as a vibrant neighborhood they want to celebrate and improve.
Moreover, generations of families send their children to our school and are happy to be a part of our church and neighborhood. Paul Lutheran continues to support the surrounding neighborhoods and their associations. We offer building space for meetings and community events, as well as an accessible forum for civic issues. We also enjoy hosting our own events that draw our neighbors and us together whether it be for fellowship, spirituality, or support. We will continue to build upon our relationship of love and service to all those inside and outside the doors of St.
This year marks the 175th anniversary of God's grace and love at St. Paul, and YES.we are celebrating! Our theme LOVE ALIVE@ 175 is based on I John in the 4th chapter, 'We love because he first loved us.' Paul Church and School continues to thrive in its original neighborhood by sharing our love with each other and everyone around us because God first loved us. We want to share our joy and thankfulness by celebrating this momentous year with our p resent and former church members, alumni, community, and new friends and visitors. Four major events have been scheduled which reflect our history and current dedication to EDUCATION, MUSIC, FAITH and COMMUNITY! As our church and school celebrate this year, we continue to reach out to ALL.and welcome YOU to be a part of God's love!
